What kind of garage door opener should I purchase?

There are different choices of garage door openers on the market. The main question to ask is, which garage door opener is right for me? To start we have three main types of drive systems found in most garages; a belt drive, chain drive and a screw drive. The amount of horsepower used is for the frequency of use. For the common garage, the three shafts will be most commonly used. If you have an 8-foot door you will need to make sure that you buy an opener for the correct size of your door. If your garage door is taller or you do not have the ability to mount one of these options because of storage above the door or vaulted ceilings, you will want to buy a Jackshaft garage door opener; choosing the right one all depends on your needs.

The more you open and close your garage door the more horsepower you will need. If you use your garage door as the main entrance of your house you will want a higher horsepower motor for the purpose of reliability. But if the main use of your garage is as a man/woman cave or a storage unit and only seems to be opened once a week or less, a ½ horsepower motor will be right for you.Belt Drive

Belt Drive systems are like the Cadillac of garage door openers: being the quietest and usually the longest lasting garage door opener. However this option is also the most expensive. But also usually comes with extra features like Wi-Fi connection. The rubber belts are steel enforced much like a car tire and are as dependable as a chain drive system.

Chain drive systems are great for the price, and can be fairly noisy. Some of the newer model chain drives are fairly Chain Drivequiet systems. Maintaining the chain and gears will help to keep your garage door working for longer and keep it quiet. Maintenance will be required once to twice a year, including lubing your chain and gears as well as tightening the chain when it stretches.

screw typeThe screw drive is another option one might choose. The positive aspects of a screw drive are that it requires less maintenance. However, if you live in harsh climates of extreme hot or cold the screw type might not stand up to the temperature. The screw drive garage door opener can be slow and noisy, but some of the newer models utilize plastic lined tracks to reduce noise and speed up the opening and closing of a garage door

jackshaftgarageA jack shaft garage door opener is not a very common garage door opener and is the most expensive option. But will allow for you to have storage above the garage. This opener is quiet and can open garage doors up to 14 feet tall. Not all garages are compatible with these openers and you will need to ask your technician if your door is compatible.

The smart door opener is the latest technology on the market but is probably not for everyone. Ryobi, Chamberlain and Lift Master all have Wi-Fi connected garage door openers.

So now you know about the different types of openers. Now we have to decide which brand to buy.
